Science Technician
Salary: Grade 3, Scale Points 5–7 (£26,427 – £27,274 FTE)
Contract: Part Time, Permanent
Hours: 3 days per week (8:20 AM – 3:20 PM with 2 x 20-minute breaks)

Are you organised, passionate about practical science, and looking for a rewarding school-based role? St Mark’s School is seeking a proactive Science Technician to provide vital technical and administrative support to our thriving Science Department.
In this hands-on role, you will work closely with teaching staff to ensure our science practicals run smoothly, safely, and efficiently. From preparing chemical solutions and apparatus to assisting with classroom demonstrations, you will play a key part in delivering engaging learning experiences for our pupils.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare practical equipment, follow "recipe cards", restock teaching laboratories with essential glassware, and deliver technical support to science teachers.
- Ensure all laboratories and prep rooms meet strict health and safety standards, following COSHH regulations and CLEAPSS guidelines for chemical storage, handling, and waste disposal.
- Carry out routine testing, cleaning, calibration, and maintenance of specialist laboratory machinery, coordinating with external service companies when required.
- Maintain accurate inventory records, assist with placing orders, take deliveries, and help organize displays for school events like Open Evenings.
- Attend up to 3 INSET days per year, support extra-curricular science activities, and occasionally assist other departments (such as Art or Technology) with chemical storage audits.
Person Specification
Essential:
- GCSE in Science (or equivalent qualification).
- Good working knowledge of standard Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Strong collaborative skills and a genuine enthusiasm for supporting staff to deliver practical science.
- Ability to carry out physical tasks relevant to the post, including lifting, bending, transporting laboratory equipment, and handling resources safely.
Desirable:
- A Level or Level 3+ qualification in a science-related subject.
- Previous experience working within a school setting or a commercial/academic laboratory environment.
- Interest or experience in running or supporting extra-curricular activities.
